To reduce the possibility of injury, as well as extending your time on the slopes, you should engage in some ski training exercises before your next ski vacation.

Because you use your legs so much during skiing, it’s important to build the muscles in your legs. This will also give you additional strength and endurance. If you belong to a gym or health club, use the leg machines to build muscle and strength. Do three sets of 10 repetitions with both legs. Follow this by reducing the weight by half and doing the same exercise on each leg individually.

If you don’t have access to a gym, you can still work your legs. Do lunges. These are also an overall body work out as well. When doing lunges, make sure your knees don’t go past your ankles to reduce the possibility of injury. In addition, squats are beneficial to your ski training, especially if you combine them with hand weights.

Another part of your ski training is to increase your aerobic endurance. You can do this be engaging in circuit training. Simply run or jog for a minute and then perform some muscle toning exercises. Repeat this three to four times. If you have access to a ski training machine, stair climber, stationary bikes and such, these are also great ways to improve your endurance.

To improve your flexibility, you’ll want to include stretching in your training regime. By improving your flexibility through stretching exercises you’ll be better able to adjust to directional changes while skiing.

It makes good sense to begin planning the next vacation as soon as possible, no matter how far away the date may be. Things will cost money (food, hotel reservations, gas, fun vacation stuff) and the longer you have to save, the better.

If no plan is made ahead of time, important details are left for the days before the trip. Hotel reservations may be difficult to get at the last minute, when resorts and hotels are usually already booked. Getting great ski deals makes going more affordable, but shopping for deals online must be done early.

Avoid a mad rush to get everything done amid short tempers and several trips between the store and home. Inevitably, something necessary is always left behind.

Make Sure to Start Ahead of Time

Save the exhaustion and stress for another day and get things done ahead of time. Some things can’t be done without money, hence the need to begin saving immediately. Make a list well ahead – a month or more – to give plenty of room for last-minute changes or additions.

No matter how far off the trip is, some things can be packed early. For instance, if the whole gang is going on rowdy ski holidays 2012-style, then the ski suit, boots, skis and poles and all the necessities of skiing can be packed ahead of time and kept somewhere handy when needed.

Certain sundry items may need to be purchased before you leave, but that’s a matter of creating a list and finding the time to shop. Pack these up, too. Plan ahead, it can only help your vacation.

Summer is a great time of year to get out on the water. Being able to stay healthy and fit can be fun when you go water skiing, surfing or even fishing. Everyone needs to get a little sun so that they can help their body make the vitamin D that they need. In addition to that, playing outdoors helps your cardiovascular system.

Being able to have fun while working out is a great way to make sure that you are getting in thirty minutes of activity a day. Surfing is a great way to use your entire body. It works almost every muscle. Having a good surf board and vest is essential when you are starting out, as well as a wetsuit.

Water skiing is another great sport. It not only helps with balance, but it increases your arm strength as well. Each time you are pulled up out of the water, you have to be able to hang on to the handle on the lead. Repeating this over and over strengthens the upper arms and chest muscles.

Fishing works in a similar way, especially if you go deep sea fishing and have to help reel in a really big catch. Spending time outdoors is a great way to stay in shape. Just remember to always be safe when you are near the water. Wear a life jacket and other protective gear, so that all you do is have fun rather than have to deal with an accident or tragedy.

Do you find it difficult to go to the gym on a daily basis? Do you find the idea of playing sports appealing? Are you bored of playing the same old baseball and basketball matches with your friends to improve your fitness? Well, why don’t you do something new and innovative to improve your fitness? How about water sports?

One of the biggest advantages of opting for water sports is that your mind shifts focus from fitness and exercise to survival. If you don’t swim when you are in the water, you will drown and die. On the other hand, there is nothing stopping you from standing idly during the basketball match, right? You are not going to sink into the ground, right? This simple difference will force you to stay mobile and active at all times.

If you are a sailing on a boat, you will have to use your muscles to power the boat over the surface of the water. Going in for a motorized boat is one option but that will just defeat the purpose of going in for water sports.

Another advantage of choosing water sports is the new things that you will learn. Knowing how to assess the change in direction of wind and making various changes to the sails to ensure they remain filled with air and move at high speed can be a very interesting task. In such a scenario, you will quickly lose sight of the physical exertion and will enjoy yourself throughout the activity. The best part is that you will end up losing your excess fat in a very short period of time.

The biggest challenge facing people these days is the lack of exercise which over a period of time leads to obesity and other related health challenges. To avoid this it is very essential that we learn to have some regular exercises. Sport provides one of the best options for exercising your mind and body and there are several such sporting activities which could be undertaken by any person willing to keep his body in shape.

Sporting activities if it has to be sustained for long periods of time has to be of such a nature that does not strain too much on your mind and body. There are light sporting activities such as cycling, walking, swimming, etc. If you are a winter sports enthusiast, you can have lot of such sports such as scuba diving, skiing, gliding, etc.

However, before choosing the right kind of sports it is better to have a decent idea as to the level of tolerance of your body and you should not indulge in activities which will cause other side effects.

Engaging in some very good indoor sporting activities is also worth considering and one of the best indoor sports is without doubt badminton. It is considered to be a complete sport which really exercises the entire body and helps you to easily burn away those extra calories very fast. A brisk game of badminton every day in the morning is more than enough to take care of your exercise needs for the day. If you really want full exercise through this sport, it would be better to play a couple of singles games instead of doubles games, because in singles you are required to cover bigger distances.

As many of you might be aware, scuba diving is perhaps one of the best water sports provided you are able to learn and master it properly. However, learning this sports reasonably well takes time, patience and effort. It is an underwater sport where the participant learns to be underwater for quite some time and carries with him or her the required breathing apparatus and other equipment. Gone are the days when people used to undertake underwater diving with the help of air being supplied from the top. But these days advanced techniques like swim fins and oxygen cylinders have made scuba diving safer and easier.

However, there are some things which need to be understood while undertaking scuba diving. The pressure of the oxygen cylinders should be at the optimum level because if it is on the higher side, it may cause decompression sickness which could prove dangerous. There are also other cares which need to be taken such as keeping the right kind of buoyancy, avoiding loss of heat from the body, when you are underwater, seeing that you do not have skin cuts because these could cause risky infections etc.

Always try to be mobile when you are underwater and carry the right kind of equipment and material with you. Avoid dangerous underwater creatures to the extent possible and never tease or annoy them. By doing so, you are most likely to be challenged by these predators in their home ground which should be avoided at all costs. Always keep regular contact with your friends on the surface and in the event of the slightest problem alert them so that you are able to come up at the earliest.

Are you a sailing freak and would like to engage in this awesome sport? But on the flip side are you a fresher and do not where to start and end as far as this sports is concerned? Do not worry. you have lot of tips available on the internet itself which will help you a lot in becoming a successful sailing sport wizard over a period of time.

The first and foremost thing that you should be knowing before getting into water with your sail boat is to understand the dynamics between wind and the sail boat. Remember wind direction and speed keep on changing frequently and unless you are reasonable an expert in adjusting to this you could be in trouble. Paying close attention as to how your boat reacts to changing wind speeds and direction is on of the basic lessons which you should master before you actually venture out into the sea, river or lake.

One more basic lesson that you should be learning is that you should never practice in a place where there is a big crowd and instead choose a reasonably sparsely populated place. But always remember to have a friend of a person who is experienced in sailing by your side.

Since you are a fresher to the sport it would always be preferable to practice sailing when the wind is slow and low. Never get into practice mode when the wind is rough because not only you will fail to handle it properly but you could be putting in jeopardy your boat and also your life if you are not careful. Be prepared to make mistakes some of which may look very silly, to begin with.

Fishing is indeed a great hobby and perhaps there are very few hobbies which can match this when it comes to sheer enjoyment, delight and adventure. However, being educated about the basics of fishing and following some useful tips regarding fishing will always go a long way in making fishing an enjoyable and memorable experience.

When it comes to lake fishing one has to be very careful about some basic things which should be perfectly in place. The first and foremost thing that you should be doing is to ensure that the lake or pond in which you are planning to try your luck in fishing is well stocked as far as fishes are concerned. Without having this basic fact ascertained you could end up wasting hours together without even having a small catch against your name. The best way to gather information about this would be check out with local people who would be able to throw more light and guide you in the right direction, on this.

One more piece of information that you should be knowing is that fishes are highly unpredictable when it comes to their feeds and some times they would not fall for any live feed in spite of your best efforts. So always carry with you a mix of live and artificial baits and try switching between these baits to ensure that you are able to lure the fish to your bait. Try various types of baits like spinner baits, water baits, plastic worms or even live baits like worms and minnows. Never give up and come out with a bait that eventually works.

When going for fishing always be on the lookout for hiding places in the lakes, where fishes would like to assemble and spend their time looking for food, laying eggs, etc. Another golden tip is not to stay in the same place for long.

While being in water could be fun it is not always the same way when you are in cold water where and too in freezing winter temperature. In such situations, planning for some exciting and good water sports could be the last thing which could come to your mind. Leave also taking a plunge in either in ocean, river or lake during winter, taking a shower during winter seasons is in itself a big task. Hence taking part in a cold water sport could be a big problem for many people and the whole project could crash before take off.

However for the person who loves cold water sport and enjoys being out there in the open during the freezing winter climate, there are some really great sporting activities which he can be a part of. He or she could take part in scuba diving, surfing, surf kayaking, wind surfing, kite boarding and even some people like to indulge in plain swimming in freezing cold waters. So it would be wrong to consider that cold water sport is only the domain of people living in tropical or warm climates where the water is much warmer and comfortable for such water sports.

But to enjoy cold water sport it is very essential that you have the right kind of materials and equipment which will help you to be properly clothed and equipped and enjoy the sports. The choice of the correct wetsuit could go a long way in making or breaking your water sports experience and having the right kind of gloves, hood and other equipment will make the whole experience enjoyable.

The type of dress material and equipment that you will be carrying would to a large extent depend on the kind of water you are treading into. If the water is freezing, you need to have dresses to suit the occasion.

It’s an assumption of traditions. The familiar games of baseball, basketball and soccer are expected among betting sites and understood to be the favorites of fans across the world. The competitions that take place within arenas are recognized as worthy of all wagers, and there seems to be no need for alternatives.

The intention of sports betting has never been to accept the conventional, however. Instead it has always been to embrace all forms of athleticism, offering every game the respect it deserves (allowing individuals to choose from the ordinary and the unusual). And land-bound events aren’t the only selections available— instead gamers can seek out the water.

Too often are waves denied, thought to offer nothing beyond beauty, but there is a variety of sports to consider among them. Surfing, boating, polo, modern pentathlons (which span the land and sea, forcing participants to endure a grueling mixture of fencing, horseback riding and a 200 meter pool freestyle), diving, underwater rugby and even standard swimming. There is no end to the possibilities and each can provide a far more compelling experience than their traditional counterparts, if only because the point spreads are more challenging to predict and statistics are changeable. The variables are all laced to water and this makes them unsure.

Some bets do still remain obvious, however. Those looking toward the summer Olympics know to toss their dollars toward legendary Michael Phelps—it’s one of the sports world’s certainties.

There can be no denying that land-locked games are the most obvious choices for wagers. Their numbers are many and their rules are familiar. Those who favor the ocean, however, are not to be forgotten, they must instead simply seek outlets that support their passions. Finding such outlets is an all too simple thing, though, with the introduction of online connections. Bets can be placed throughout the world in a shared celebration of water.

Scuba diving is intimidating to most people. Even though they would love to learn, the idea of being submersed in deep water is frightening. In addition, many scuba accidents frighten people away from scuba diving. Many of the scuba related accidents happen because of the lack of training. If you are interested in scuba diving, you first step should be to take lessons from a certified scuba instructor.

Typical scuba lessons begin with safety. This is the most important class for beginning scuba divers. It is important that you invest time in learning scuba safety. It may save your life or your diving partner’s life.

You will spend a great deal of time learning about scuba equipment including the oxygen tank. Many accidents occur because beginners do not spend enough time learning about the scuba equipment. Most beginners are excited and ready to jump in the water. A reputable instructor will make sure you spend sufficient time familiarizing your self with the equipment.

Many scuba classes are typically held in swimming pools. This helps protect the beginning divers and most beginning divers are more comfortable learning in a familiar place like a swimming pool.

Once you have graduated from diving in a swimming pool, you will get to enjoy your first dive in a lake or the ocean. The dive is supervised by certified divers to ensure your safety. You will continue with supervised dives until you earn enough diving hours to be certified.

Once you become certified, you can join the scuba club where you took your lessons or you can find another club within your community. The scuba clubs plan numerous diving trips and you have the benefit of diving with divers that have years of experience. In addition, joining a scuba club is a wonderful way to meet new people with similar interests.

Before choosing a scuba school, make sure you research the reputation of several schools in your area. Choose a school that has instructors that have been certified for a number of years. The more experience the instructors have, the safer you will be.

Wakeboarding was developed from several techniques derived from snow boarding, water skiing and surfing. It is similar to water skiing except instead of skis you use a board similar to snow boarding. The wake boarder is pulled behind a boat at speeds of up to 25 miles per hour.

After snowboarding became popular in the earlier 1980s, wakeboarding developed in the late 1980s. The sport quickly caught on and is one of today’s most popular water sports.

If you are interested in learning wakeboarding, you can find many wakeboarding organizations that offer introductory classes. Most of them require you take a water safety course in addition to the beginning wakeboarding classes.

Many of the organizations will provide you with everything you need to get your through the classes. Once you have completed the classes, you can purchase your own board and gear. The wakeboarding organization will give you information on the equipment you will need and the best board to buy.

Once you begin wakeboarding, you will love it. It is a phenomenal water sport and as you get better, you will be able to incorporate many tricks. Wakeboarding is a fun sport and easy to learn especially if you already know how to water ski. If you are a beginner to water sports, you will learn to wakeboard quickly.

The most important thing to learn is water safety. Learning water safety is crucial for any water sport. While many people assume they know how to be safe in the water, there are numerous tragic accidents that could have been prevented if proper water safety guidelines were followed.

Do not assume you know every thing there is to know about water safety. Take the necessary water safety courses to ensure your time on the water is safe and enjoyable for you and your loved ones.

Finding a job in this difficult employment market requires special skills. Rather than relying on the labor market to create a position, acquire skills that companies demand. For people who love to swim and scuba dive, the passion can be turned into a nontraditional career. Commercial diving jobs for oil companies can lead to big paychecks and the type of excitement that few people will ever experience at a traditional desk job.

Working for the oil companies means traveling the globe like James Bond. The latest offshore drill needs divers, and the hot spots could be anywhere from the Red Sea to the Gulf of Mexico or off the coast of Alaska. This is not a job for the faint of heart or for someone without 100 percent confidence in their skills. Divers enter into some of the most extreme conditions on the planet. Making a mistake in the extreme darkness and cold could prove deadly.

Entering into this career will require more than a passion for diving and a few diving lessons at a resort. The International Marine Contractors Association provides information on the type of training required to achieve proper certification. Becoming an expert in both surface supplied diving and scuba diving are necessary to embark upon a career in commercial diving.

Not everyone can attend a traditional brick and mortar university. People interested in diving for a career can expand their knowledge base and become more marketable by getting training in fields such as biology or marine biology. For divers interested in launching a career while attending school, there are many different online degrees that can be pursued from anywhere in the world. The evolving world economy means finding a niche in the marketplace. Rather than worrying about finding a job, pursue a passion such as diving and turn a hobby into a career.

For those that are new to surfing, you will need to buy more than a surfboard. The surfboard is obviously the most important piece of equipment, however, it is not the only equipment you will need. If you are new to surfing, you will want to get advice from professional or avid surfers on the best board to meet your needs.

You may initially want to purchase a low-cost or used surfboard. Many people make the mistake of investing in an expensive board, only to have it sitting in the garage or an empty room. So, unless you are truly committed to surfing, you will want to save your money and simply buy a board that is safe and functional.

Once you have purchased a surfboard, you will need to purchase other equipment that you will need to make surfing a safe and enjoyable experience. You will want to purchase a good wetsuit to use for the months of the year when the water temperature drops. You do not have to buy an expensive wetsuit. You will find many reasonably priced and functional wetsuits at any surf shop.

Many surfers use wax to prevent slipping off the board. You can choose to use board wax or you can choose to purchase surf footpads. These pads prevent you from slipping just as the wax does. Many surfers have switched to using the footpads and the pads can be found at any surf shop.

You will also need a board leash and one usually comes with the board if you buy it new. You have the option of purchasing a foam board cover that protects the tail and nose of the board. The cover is not a requirement; however, most boards sustain damage in the nose and tail.

Most surfers keep a backpack with sunscreen, water and a first aid kit. While this may seem trivial, surfing accidents occur frequently and if you are out in the sun for hours, you need sunscreen.

Surfing is fun and exciting. However, it can be dangerous. Make sure you are well prepared before heading out into the water.

Whether you have been swimming all of your life or just started to head out into the water for the first time, the lifeguard is the person that has complete control over the pool and everyone in it. There are times that you may hear the whistle and not realize what is going on or what you are being asked to do, but it is so important to look over and make sure that you find out what they are saying. Even if you are in the middle of water polo practice or swimming your laps to prepare for the big race this weekend, the lifeguard’s instructions are to be followed.

While you are at the pool to have a good time or practice a sport, a lifeguard is there to keep an eye on all that goes on inside the walls of the pool. You might be caught up in a game and not realize that there is a commotion going on at the other end. You trust the lifeguard to keep an eye out while you are able to continue what you are working on. However, if you hear the two long whistles, it is time to drop everything and get out of the pool.

There are several reasons that a lifeguard would blow the whistle. The first might be a person that needs some type of assistance. Many times, if a person is struggling, a lifeguard will reach out a floatation device to them or in the case of children, the guard might jump in after them. If you see the lifeguard blowing the whistle but still not getting in, this doesn’t mean that there is no emergency. If someone has a potential injury to their neck and back, it is important for the lifeguard to gently enter the water and look to stabilize that person as best as possible. If it is an emergency, call 911.

Everyone talks about the levels of chlorine in the pool and the overall acidity of the water, but as a water sports athlete, what does that mean to you? It is always important to check the chemical content of the pool to make sure that the water is safe and maintained in a way that is beneficial to all patrons using it. You may have seen a lifeguard or pool manager getting water from the pool and putting drops of various colors in. This is a chemical check of the pool

Chlorine is one of the most important parts of pool maintenance. It should be checked regularly, especially if there are a lot of people in the pool or there have been recent problems with the chlorine pump. A person takes a certain amount of water from the pool and adds a white tablet to the water to check for chlorine. Typically, the darker pink the water turns, the more chlorine in the pool. If you see this test being done and the water not changing, it is time to exit the pool until the problem can be solved.

The other test that is performed frequently is the check for the acidity of the pool. So many times, people’s eyes burn as they swim in the pool. Everyone blames it on the chlorine, but it is actually the acidity of the pool that makes this happen. Instead of a white tablet, drops are poured into a measured amount of water. Depending on the color, the pool will have a low or high ph. The lifeguard or pool manager will then decide how much acid, if any, should be added to the pool. Usually, when the acid is being added, patrons are asked to leave the pool for at least 20-30 minutes. These tests are key to make sure that patrons can enjoy the pool without fear of health risks.

Most runners create a playlist that keeps them motivated as they look to make it over the next hill and onto the next mile. Music can be motivating. It can be the one thing that pushes a person to just keep running, or swimming, a little bit longer or getting just a little bit further than last time. For some, the athlete’s workout playlist is sacred.

Today, swimming has that same luxury with waterproof mp3 players that make it easy to keep up with the pace and work hard while listening to your favorite songs. There are various brands available with different options. Some even claim to have a case that will keep your own music equipment away from the water while you swim. Either way, this music can be motivating and something that you want to hang on to while you swim.

When it comes to team sports, each one usually has some type of music that they listen to as they warm up for the big game ahead. They may do drills to it and look to get the fans motivated. But when it comes time to swim, there is nothing by you and the water and silence. For some, the thought of adding in a soundtrack is completely out of the question. However, for those that have tried it, they rarely go back to the silence.

When swimming, it is important to find something that is comfortable for your ears and doesn’t become a distraction as you are working through your laps. You also want to find music that encourages you. For some looking for just a relaxing swim, it may be the notes of classical piano that transport them to a whole new world. For others, it may be the sound of electric guitars and banging on the drums. In the case of workout music, to each his own.

No matter what type of water sport that you participate in, there is a chance that kids are going to be in and around the water. Because of this, there are certain precautions that need to be taken no matter what is going on. Someone always needs to be responsible for nothing but watching the kids around water.

Many times that designated person is a lifeguard. If there is a swim meet going on in one area of the pool, there may be a special place that the kids can play and be supervised. One of the best individuals to supervise children around the water is a lifeguard. He or she is trained to take care of individuals that may run into problems around the water. They know the rules that keep kids safe.

If you are bringing your child with you while you swim laps, even if they know how to swim, it is important to make sure that someone else is watching them. Don’t think that just because they can swim and know there way around the water that they are going to be okay. Bring a responsible person with you. Let that person know what your expectations are for the kids as well as the things that are acceptable and the things that aren’t.

Even with a responsible person around, it is also important to teach kids to be careful of the water. You just want them to have a healthy fear of the water and the unpredictability that it brings with it. Teach them not to run around the water. Teach them to never swim alone. Teach them to make good decisions when it comes to pool, lake and ocean safety. Then, show them that you take these rules seriously by leaving someone in charge of them while they are around it.

A triathlon is the ultimate fitness challenge and test of endurance. With training and the right gear, you’ll be prepared for all aspects of your triathlon.

In a triathlon, athletes participate in three different sports (running, cycling, and swimming) back to back with timed stops in between to allow racers to change clothing and store bikes. While the length of these races varies, standard triathlon distances include a 750m swim, 20km bike, and 5km run. Some triathlons allow competitors to race in relays.

Triathlon Training

Triathlons involve a great deal of endurance, so it can take quite a bit of time to prepare your body. Most of the training for a triathlon is used to build-up endurance in all muscle groups, since the sports in a triathlon utilize both upper and lower body strength. Most competitors spend between six months and a year training for their first triathlon.

Triathlon Swimming Gear

To be competitive in a triathlon, the right equipment is essential. A triathlon store will give you a good idea of what you need to compete, which includes a good bike, a good pair of running shoes, and the right swimming gear.

Swimmers have a distinct edge over their competition when they wear a wetsuit rather than swim trunks or bathing suits. Wetsuits have a number of advantages; for one, they make swimmers more aerodynamic in the water.

Additionally, wetsuits reduce friction because they are made of a much smoother and slicker surface than the surface of the skin, called neoprene, allowing you to glide through the water much faster. The neoprene also makes swimmers more buoyant (floating higher) in the water. As a result, you are able to glide through much faster through the water.

If you are preparing for your first triathlon, it should include proper training and the right swimming gear to help you succeed.

While there are all types of equipment that people need when it comes to participating in water sports, very few can compare to the need for sunscreen. Being out on the water can make a person think that they don’t need sunscreen. They are staying cool with the water and around them and don’t realize that the sun is beating down on their skin.

Find sunscreen that is waterproof. Take note: just because it is waterproof doesn’t mean that it will last all day. It still needs to be applied regularly. In fact, better to apply it too frequently than not enough. Every part of your skin that is not covered up by clothing needs to be covered in sunscreen.

Many people make the mistake of thinking that a hat is protecting them from the sun. The sun can come off the water and still burn your face, even if you have on a hat and sunglasses. Put plenty of sunscreen in your hands and work from top to bottom to over all parts of your face. Many times people forget to put sunscreen on their ears and the back on their necks. If any part of your back and shoulders are showing, be sure to cover them well. You can ask someone to help you if you can’t reach.

If you are participating in any type of water sport that involves wearing a life jacket, it is important to take it off while you apply or reapply the sunscreen. The jacket may prevent you from getting certain areas of the body and it can hurt to find that there is just one small area of your body that is left sunburned. There are all types and brands of sunscreen on the market, so most people search until they find one that is best for them.

Most pools set up lap lanes for patrons interested in working out or practicing their strokes. These lines float above the surface of the water and give people a line from one end of the pool to the other. When the pool gets busy, extra lanes can be set up to accommodate everyone that wants to swim. However, when things get full, it may be necessary for two or more people to swim in one lap lane.

If there are two people in the lane, try to keep one person going down each side at one time. Like driving cars, each person stays on the right hand side as they swim. When it comes to the point where the two pass each other, it is important to give the other person as much room as possible. It keeps everyone in line and prevents them from running into each other.

The pace and speed is one of the most important parts of lap lane etiquette. Because of the limited amount of space, there isn’t a lot of room to try and pass the other person. It is best to find a person that is swims at your speed in order to make it all go smoothly. Once you find the lane, it is important to get the other person’s attention in order to let them know that you are going to be swimming in the lane. While you don’t have to ask, it is always nice to present it in that way.

Once you get ready to swim, wait until the other swimmer is down at the other end of the pool. Kick off and get started, trying to keep distance between the two of you. Remember that in situations like these, you may be able to do all of the things that you ad planned or swim at the place you were planning to, but it will get you in the water.

Whether a person can’t swim or they just ran into a little trouble, they may be looking to you for a little help. While you want to do all that you can, you need to make sure that you take care of yourself first and foremost. People that are struggling have a tendency to grab onto anything they can reach to keep themselves above water and you don’t want to be what they try to use to stay afloat.

Throw something into the water for them to use. Most pools and boats have some type of flotation device that you can throw out to them. Yell for them to grab on and try to calm down. Next, if a rope is attached, you can use it to pull them to the side of the pool or boat. You don’t want to just stand there at the edge and pull. The person can still pull hard enough to have you fall into the water as well. Stay as low to the ground as possible and pull them in. If there are other people around, be sure to have them help.

Once they have gotten close, you can lay on your stomach and stretch your hand out into the water. If there are other people there, have them hold onto your feet or legs to stabilize you. You can pull them close enough to the side to get them out. If you are by yourself, you may not be able to pull them out. You may have to just keep them to the side until assistance arrives.

Remember that the last option is to go in after them, however, make sure that you are trained to handle something like this. Lifeguards are taught to even push a person away until they calm down and accept the help.

Diving is one of the most dangerous things that you can do in the water. Because you are going head first into an area (with your arms extended) you run the risk of hitting something with your head and damaging your spine. Because of this, some swimming lessons have removed the diving portion for safety reasons. If you are working on diving, it is important to be in an area with a lifeguard or some other instructor to make sure that you are doing it correctly.

One of the easiest ways to start is to sit on the edge of the pool with one leg below you. You other leg is pulled up to your chest with your toes on the edge. This will give you a little bit of a push when you begin the dive. Stretch your arms out above your head and let your hands meet. Lean over your knees so that you are hunched over and your fingers are pointing towards the water. From here, you can almost lean over into the water.

With diving, the point is not to get down as deep into the water as possible. You only want to enter the water and skim your body just below the surface. For most people, diving is a way to get in the water quickly and get moving. Some people don’t pay attention when they dive and just try to make it in as quickly as possible. Don’t make that mistake. Just take your time, make sure the area is clear.

Also, when you dive in, make sure that the water is deep enough. Even though you aren’t planning to go down very far, you want to have some room for error. Also, when it comes to open waters, like an ocean or lake, don’t jump in unless you are sure that the water is okay.

When you watch a friend put on a life jacket, jump off the boat, and easily begin water skiing, it looks so simple. But if it is your first time giving it a try, remember that it might take a while to get the basics down. Being able to stand up while a boat pulls you along with nothing but a rope takes practice and until the timing and positioning is right, it might mean quite a few spills into the water.

One of the best ways to get started is to watch another person water ski. Sit in the back of the boat and watch their technique. Don’t be fooled with they get right up the first time and make it look like they have always been able to do it. Take note of how their hands grip the handle on the rope. When it is your turn, you want to be able to do just what they do.

Be sure you have the life jacket on before you enter the water. Most people find that it is easier to put the skis on once you get into the water. Position yourself like you are sitting back on your heels with the rope in front of you. When the boat begins to move, you are going to feel a quick pull and you want to be ready. Make sure that you work on keeping yourself facing up and not falling straight into the water.

It might take a few times to get it right, so plan to see the water up close and personal for a few times before you get the hang of it. In fact, you may not be able to get it at all on your first trip out. Don’t be discouraged. Just keep on trying. Lots of people might want to tell you what you are doing wrong. It can be overwhelming if you are with a big group.

Swimming laps can be a great way to get out of the house and get some exercise. In order to get the best workout, there are several things that can be done to keep it interesting and single out different muscles and parts of the body. You don’t need anything more that yourself and a body of water to swim, but if you want more from the workout, there are a few pieces of equipment that you can bring with you.

You can find a kickboard just about anywhere. When you get into the lane and want to start swimming laps, hold the kickboard out in front of you, keep you head above the water and kick your feet. You can work on different kicks and take your time or work on speed. While you may have seen people lay their upper body on top and try to balance, this isn’t the most efficient use of the equipment.

Just like the kickboard, there is a flotation device that goes between the knees to keep the legs afloat while a swimmer works on the arms. This may be a bit more difficult to find, but it would be well worth the purchase. Swim laps and take the time to make each stroke count and keep your legs together to make sure the flotation device stays in place.

You can use flippers on your feet to get some extra propulsion and you can use gloves with webbing between the fingers. You can even find swimsuits that create extra drag in the water. This requires that you use more effort to go the same amount of distance. If you are tired of just swimming from one end of the pool to the other and you want to be able to change things ups, you can use these pieces of equipment.

You may have always heard as a child that you should never swim alone. This statement may hold more weight than you realize. It isn’t just about eating too much and then finding yourself with a cramp and it isn’t just about running by a pool and hitting your head.

Anytime you are around the water, it is always a good idea to have someone with you. There are so many reasons why this is important. While you may be a strong swimmer and completely competent, but unexpected things happen all of the time. One of the most common issues that swimmers experience, especially when long distances away from the shore is exhaustion. It might not seem that far when you first get started but halfway there things begin to look a little daunting.

Another unexpected issue can be some type of a fall or injury that occurs which makes it difficult to keep swimming or even keep yourself afloat. This is one of the reasons why it is so important to never jump into water head first. Even if you think you know the depth of the water, or plan to dive in and swim along the surface, there are things that could make that impossible.

When it comes to water sports, even those that require swimming long distances alone, you’ll notice that someone is always around for just in case. Even if the other person cannot assist you, they can go and get help. They can talk to you and keep you calm. If they need to, they can pull you out of the water. This isn’t just something that mothers tell their children to keep them in line. This is an important fact that everyone should be aware of and can even be the difference between life and death.

Being out on the water can be one of the best experiences in the world, especially when it comes to boating. Taking a deep breath in and smelling the salty water, looking down to see a a school of fish swimming by, and feeling the rocking back and forth of the boat being moved by the waves. For some, that movement is what makes being out the water miserable. They feel sick and have a tendency to avoid these types of situations.

There are some solutions to avoid motion sickness while boating. Different people respond differently to each of the options. If possible, try something out, spend some time out on the water (not all day) and just get a feel for whether or not the method was effective. If there is a sever case, it may be important to talk to a physician before making any attempt.

Most people start with medication as a solution. Dramamine is one of the most popular options. It should be taken before heading onto the board. It might make the person a little drowsy, so test it out to see if this is a good idea for future expeditions. Others ask their physicians for the patch. It can be placed behind the ear and delivers medication to the body to prevent motion sickness. This too has side effects, so it is important to weigh out the benefits and the effects when making the decision.

Bracelets are also popular with many people, including pregnant women. Those suffering from morning sickness wear them to try and get rid of the sick feeling. These can be worn for extended amounts of time. Plastic on each bracelet is pressed on a certain part of the wrist to relieve symptoms. Try some of these options before giving up completely one some of the water sports that you want to explore.

If you don’t think you are ready to surf, bodyboarding may be the perfect place to start. Instead of needing to concentrate of the feel of the waves and your own balance, this water sport allows a person to just concentrate on staying on board. Many times out on the beach, you will see people simply walking out to a place where they can stand and then riding the waves in on a small foam board.

Build up experience by starting slowly. Just walk out until the water is a little higher than your waist. Right before a wave reaches you, lay on top of the board, facing the shore and hold on tight. As the wave comes by, the board will be carried on the wave and you will feel yourself move. If you wait, the waves will take you straight into the sand. (You may want to stand up and try again before you find your board all the way to shore. Depending on the weather conditions and wind, the waves may be rough or fairly smooth.

Because timing is everything when it comes to bodyboarding, it may take a few times to catch a wave. The good news is that they just keep coming and so if you miss one, another will follow shortly. It takes practice to get it down, but the more comfortable you feel, the more you will enjoy this relaxing water sport. Venture farther out each time, but be careful. Being out in the ocean can be unpredictable. At the very least, it is always a good idea to be out in the water with a friend.

As you progress, you may be looking for more of a challenge. Much like surfing, when bodyboarding, you can ride waves out in deeper waters and even try out tricks and special moves. If you just aren’t feeling enough excitement, it may be time to move on to surfing.

While you may have come to the pool as part of a team, a swim meet requires that individuals carry their own weight to ensure a victory for the team. This can be tough as there is not a lot of opportunity for teamwork. (With the exception of the relay races.) When it is your turn to step up to the deck or the diving board, you may have a sense of being alone and not having a team supporting you.

In-spite of this feeling, your job is to do the best that you can and bring all that you have to the event that you are responsible for. For a moment, take the idea of a team off the table and only focus on what you are getting ready to do. Get rid of the pressure of succeeding for the team and look to beat the person to your left and the person to your right.

If you are having trouble concentrating, remove everything from your mind and do the best that you can to ignore everything going on around you. If it helps, imagine that you are only competing against yourself with the goal to break your best time. This can not only get rid of the anxiety, it can also give you a new sense of focus and purpose.

If you don’t have any events going on and you have the time, walk over to a teammates race and be there to support him. By taking this first step, you may find that someone on the team takes the time to be there for you at the beginning and start of your own race. When it comes to swim teams, the members set the tone for working together. If you don’t see this as something that your group is doing, take it upon yourself to look for a way to connect with and encourage each other.

You may have heard friends talk about how much fun they had out at the lake, spending the morning quietly anticipating the first catch. If this type of water sport interests you, it may be time to get some equipment and head out early on a Saturday morning to learn a new skill. Before you go out, there will be several different basic items that you will need to get you started.

First and foremost, you need a fishing pole and hooks. Without these two things, there is not a lot of chance for success. If this is your first time going out, you may even want to borrow one from a friend. If you really have a great time you can go out and buy one for yourself. If you find out that it just isn’t for you, you aren’t out any money or time. There are certain sizes of poles for specific types of fishing and many people like to try out several different types of fishing before buying anything.

Don’t even think about heading out in the water with friends without bringing bait. The type used with depend on the fishermen that you are going with. Don’t feel bad asking what they are going to use and how much you need to bring. Most fisherman won’t mind sharing a few tips here and there while you are out on the water if you bring extra bait along.

Be sure to dress properly. At the very least, be sure to have a hat to keep the sun away from your face. It is also important to bring sunscreen if you plan on being out for an extended amount of time. Wear layers of clothing. In the morning, it might be chilly, but warm up considerably through the afternoon. You can remove or add layers at the weather changes.

At just six months old, some babies are becoming the youngest members of a swimming lesson. One program may just look to have the child acclimated to the water and what it feels like to get a little splash of it on the body or even on the head. Other programs begin teaching babies how to roll over onto their backs to simulate floating until an adult is able to pull them from the water. No matter what type of program, there are benefits to putting smaller children into the water at an early age.

It goes without saying that to participate in any type of water sports, a person must know how to swim. If they don’t they aren’t going to be very successful swimming across a pool to make a goal and they won’t be all that safe then they look to dive into the water and can’t find their way back to the edge. For most people, the younger they are exposed to the water, the more comfortable they are going to be. If a child has been in the water (even with just a Parent and Tot swimming lesson) every time they enter the water they become more familiar with the weightless feeling and the way the body moves from one place to another.

Once swimming is mastered, children have the chance to try out a variety of water sports and see which ones interest them the most. They may want to try out the swim team one summer and a water polo team the next. The more activities they are exposed to, the more opportunities will be available to them. It goes without saying that they will also just enjoy being out in the water, playing, and having fun with friends. Get this kids out in the water as soon as possible and open the doors of possibility for them when it comes to water sports.

No matter what water sports you are planning to participate in, you need to know at least a basic stroke to get you around in the water. While you may already know how to doggie paddle, that isn’t going to be the stroke of choice for most water sport athletes. The front crawl is considered by some to be one of the most basic strokes to learn and can easily be modified for whatever you are trying to achieve.

Once you are in the water, kick off the side of the pool and float, face down in the water. Your arms will be extended out above your head. This is the starting position for the stroke. As you swim, the goal is to move forward and keep your body horizontal. When you learn the movements of your feet and arms, you can move slowly or quickly; whatever works best for you.

Throughout the time you are swimming, your feet are going to be kicking rapidly. You only move your legs from the knee down, alternating your feet as you kick. To move quickly through the water kick faster. If you are looking to rest a little, you can move into a relaxing kick without much force behind it.

Your arms are also going to alternate as you swim. Place all of your fingers together and slightly bend your fingers. Your hands may look a little like scoops, which is perfect for what you are planning to do. From the arms forward position, take your right arm and pull it down, while completely extended down to your thighs. Once there, two things are going to happen at once. That arm is going to come out of the water, elbow first, and go back to position above your head. At the same time, your left arm will go through the scooping motion down to your legs. Practice will perfect the stroke.

You may see people swimming laps at the local pool and wonder what it is that they are wearing on their heads. Different people wear swim caps for different reasons. You may see everyone on the water polo team wearing matching caps. You may see small children on the swim team wearing them at practice or a meet. If you have never tried one before, this may be the time.

One of the most practical reasons for wearing a swim cap is to keep all of a person’s hair out of their face. For women, hair can be especially distracting if it prevents her from seeing where she is going. It can even take away from her speed time if she is constantly working it move it. Because the swim cap fits tightly from the forehead to the back of the neck and sometimes down over the ears, it keeps everything out of the way.

Swim caps help to create a streamline when swimming. As you move in the water your arms and legs are propelling your forward. The cap prevents anything from taking away from your speed because your body creates a sleek line that glides through the water. The goggle straps go right over the swim cap ensuring a tight fit. For this reason, some swimmers will not practice or enter a meet without a swim cap on.

Believe it or not, swim caps do some in different sizes. If think you are ready to try one out, head over to a water sports or swimming specialty store and have an associate help you choose the right size. Remember that the fit is supposed to be tight and it might be a little uncomfortable when you first try it on. When you get to the pool,, swim a few laps without the cap and then a few with it on to see if you notice the difference.

You may take one look at that life vest and insist that there is no way you are going to wear it. Typically, these things don’t come in stylish colors and they aren’t going to get you any type of fashion awards. However, you may not realize that this piece of equipment can be the one thing that saves your life if an emergency situation arises.

If you are out in the water and know how to swim, you may feel confident that a life vest isn’t something that you will need. If you fall into the water, you already know how to swim, right? What you may not think about is falling into the water and being unconscious. While you don’t want to think about bad things happening while you are out enjoying water sports, the sad fact is that there are times when things don’t go as planned. The life vest will keep you afloat, and should move your body into the correct position to keep your head above water.

A life vest can also be necessary if something happens and you end up without a boat or other equipment and are stuck in the water for an extended amount of time. Again, you may think to yourself that you know how to tread water and there is no need for anything to hold you up. Unfortunately if you were injured, you may not have the full mobility to keep yourself afloat. In the same way, if you are going to be out on the water for hours, eventually your body is going to begin to get tired and you may run out of energy to keep going. Next time you climb on the boat and see a life vest waiting for you, remember what it can do to keep you safe.

The mysteries of the deep have long proven a draw to man, who spent years trying to perfect a way in which to explore the exciting underwater environment. And nowadays advancements in technology mean that diving is a pastime that is accessible to all who are willing to invest a little effort.
If the idea of exploring under the sea is one that appeals to you, then you will need to look into learning to dive in order to ensure that you will be safe in the water. Here we look at some popular choices of diving instruction options.

Learn to Dive at Home or Away?

For those who are looking to learn the basic principles of diving and acquire an internationally recognised PADI diving qualification there are two basic options. First of all, you can begin to take diving lessons at home. Lessons are held at locations such as leisure centers and allow the amateur to learn the basic skills necessary to be able to safely take to the water.
The advantages of learning to dive near home are that, firstly, this is likely to be a less expensive option than an in resort course, and secondly, if you intend to invest in a diving break later on you will already have mastered the basics, giving you more time explore and enjoy the waters away from home.
If, however, you want to combine learning to dive with a pleasurable getaway, then you may wish to invest in a resort based diving course, where initial lessons are held in a pleasant vacation location and there are immediate opportunities to reap the benefits of your newly acquired skills. This option, is, of course, more expensive but many who participate in resort based diving schools say that the experience, environment and camaraderie is well worth the extra investment.

Surfing is one of those pastimes that many people aspire to take part in but only a small percentage ever bite the bullet and go for it – even fewer actually master the skill. One reason why people seem to fail when attempting to learn to surf is that they come at the idea unprepared and so set themselves up to fail. Because they are unprepared they find their first surfing experience is an unpleasant one that leaves them feeling like a failure. To avoid this people who are keen to wish to learn to surf should take a few simple steps in preparation for taking up this new hobby.

Prepare Yourself Physically for Starting to Surf

While pro surfers may make the sport look effortless surfing really does take a physical toll on the body. If you want to try surfing you will need both strength and stamina in some measure. Preparing your body for the introduction to a new activity is key if you want early lessons to go well. Getting in shape at the gym and building stamina through cardio workouts are both great ways to get yourself prepared before beginning surfing lessons.

Have the Right Equipment

For surfing to be a safe and fun experience you will need to have the right equipment in place. What you need will vary according to where and in what conditions you intend to start your surfing career, so speak to your instructor before you start out and ask what will be provided for you and what they would advise you provide for yourself. If you are planning to go it alone go to a professional surf shop and seek the advice of sales staff on what equipment would be best for a beginner at the location you are intending to surf.

So you have decided you want to try your hand at surfing? Maybe you have even taken a few lessons using equipment borrowed from the surf school and you enjoyed it enough to decide that it is time for a little investment in your new activity? So what sort of board should you be looking to buy?

Buying Your First Surfboard

Obviously a board is the most essential piece of equipment for anyone who wants to be able to surf independently. While it may be tempting to pick a board out simply on the look of it, choosing your first board will play a key role in how quickly you are able to develop your surfing skills, so surfboards should be carefully selected.

Length: The length of board you need will depend on how tall you are. Your board should be around one to two feet taller than your head when you are standing up with it on its end.
Width: For beginners a wider board is a wiser choice as this will make it easier to master the basics of surfing. While you may want a sleeker looking board later on, choosing a wider on at the start is a good way to bolster your skills.
Thickness: While a board of around two and a half to three and a half inches thick will suffice for most beginners, would be surfers should bear in mind that the thickness of the board plays an important role in buoyancy and if you are a heavier person you may need to select a thicker design.

A trip to buy a board can be an exciting outing, but try not to get emotionally attached to any of the designs you see on offer before talking to a professional sales person and getting their opinion on what board will be best suited to you.

If you have tried your hand at surfing an enjoyed it enough to want to invest in your own equipment you will need to think carefully about what items are essential purchases.
What you need will vary depending on the area you intend to do your surfing in, so it is always a good idea to seek the advice of your surfing instructor or the professional salespeople at your local store in order to ascertain what items you will need. Wetsuit

Think about the climate where you intend to surf – is it more sensible to opt for a “shortie” type wetsuit, which will leave forearms and shins exposed or do you need to invest in a full body suit? If you are unsure it can be a good idea to take a trip to the beach where you will be doing most of your surfing and check what the regulars are wearing. While wetsuits are hard to struggle into, do not be tempted to go for a looser size since any gaping at the collar or cuffs can allow for sudden influxes of cold water, which can be a shock to the system.

Rash Vest

Every surfer needs a rash vest to stop them from being irritated by the chafing of their wetsuit against their skin while they paddle and surf. A rash vest is also a good extra layer that can help keep surfers warm in cooler waters, or can be used independently as surf wear in warmer climes.

Cold Water Surf Clothing

If you are planning to surf in a colder climate then you will probably want to invest in a few extras including boots, made from wetsuit material which can keep the feet from becoming overly cold, gloves which will do the same for the hands, and even a hood which helps to prevent the loss of heat from the head.

If you have been bitten by the sailing bug then it is likely that nothing will be more appealing to you than getting away from it all on a self sail holiday. The independence of breaks such as these offers sailing enthusiasts an exciting alternative to a traditional vacation. However, if your previous on board experience has been limited to sessions with an instructor or to day trips in a charter it can be hard to know what to take when heading off for a sailing break.
When you start to pack for a sailing vacation it is important to bear in mind the environment you will be in during your break. Unless you are very lucky (and very rich) it is likely that space, including storage space, on board your vessel will be limited.
For this reason it is a good idea to try and keep what you carry to a minimum, otherwise you will spend your time away tripping over excess baggage that you will regret having brought along.
To avoid unnecessary cluttering of your on board environment make sure you pack a soft foldable bag rather than a rigid suitcase as this can be easily folded and stowed on board.
Keep to a minimal capsule wardrobe for hot destinations, remember that if the weather gods smile on you the break will be mostly spent in shorts or bathers!
A good pair of walking shoes is a good idea if you plan to explore onshore in your destination and don’t forget to have a hat and sunglasses on hand – the sun can be unforgiving out on the water.
Non-apparel essentials include entertainment such as travel size board games, books and something to play music on and cosmetics including sun cream and moisturiser as the unique on board environment can take its toll on the complexion if left uncared for.

If you plan to take up diving as a serious hobby then eventually you will want to invest in your own wetsuit. While rental suits or those provided free of charge by your diving school may be ok at the beginning of your diving career, once you progress a little further it is likely you will begin to crave the comfort of your own suit, as well as starting to desire the diving independence that investing in your own equipment can provide. However, wetsuits are not a one size fits all item and divers should carry out some research before settling on a suit to purchase.

Do You Need a Special Wetsuit for Diving?

Wetsuits created with diving in mind may look very similar to those used for surface water sports but there some almost imperceptible differences, so ensure you explain to sales staff what kind of activity you will be using your purchase for. For example, a wetsuit created for use in an under water capacity is likely to be cut tighter around the upper body than one created for surface sports, as the latter require a greater freedom of movement. The tighter cut of a suit made for diving will help prevent inward water flow and flushing which can reduce body heat dramatically when immersed.

Choosing a Style of Wetsuit

The style of wetsuit you choose is likely to be dependent on the climates in which you intend to dive. If you are diving in warm tropical waters a “shortie” type suit will suffice, whereas cooler climes will require a full body suit.
He truth about wetsuits for diving is that you get what you pay for. If you have a lower budget it is likely the suit you can afford will be of a lower quality than those in higher price brackets, but this is again where the advice of sales staff is invaluable.

Learning Sailing Skills for Free

If you are a complete beginner to the art of sailing then you will need instruction in order to become a competent sailor and useful crew member. While traditional sailing lessons can be expensive there are ways of acquiring the necessary skills without having to pay out, as long as you are willing to pull your weight (quite literally actually as will be explained below!)
If you wish to learn some sailing skills for free then it can be a good idea to contact your local sailing club and offer your services for free as an unskilled member of crew to their members.
Competitive sailing teams need people on board who can act as a mobile ballast, helping to balance the vessel as it tips in the wind. Often described as “rail meat” these crew members need to rush from one side of the deck to the other on command in order to keep the ship upright in the water.
If you can get a place on a crew in this way, you will be able to learn a lot from watching and listening to the skilled crew members, who may also be willing to pass on their knowledge to you by way of thanks for your efforts.

Sailing for Free as a Skilled Crew Member

Once you have acquired the necessary skills to be a competent sailor you will be able to find opportunities to use them as much or as little as you choose. Dedicated websites help hook up crew members and boat owners for trips of all distances and durations, meaning you can choose to sail for free during your vacations or make a career of travelling the world as crew.

For those who love to dive there is an amazing amount of choice out there of destinations for a diving vacation. While it may be impossible to come up with a definitive top ten, here are ten of the top destinations for diver across the world.

Red Sea: Teeming with fish, coral and other creatures, the Red Sea makes a great destination for divers and also offers the opportunity to dive wrecks and reefs depending on visitor’s preferences.

Australia: Home to the Great Barrier Reef, with a great climate and laid back atmosphere, Australia makes a top choice for those looking for a chilled out diving destination with some exciting underwater sights to see.

Florida: Closer to home some great dive can be found in Florida. Clear waters and great guides can be found here.

Belize: For divers looking to head off of the beaten track Belize makes a great vacation spot. Unspoiled endersea environments mean that marine ecology is a big pull in this area.

Hawaii: The volcanic islands of Hawaii offer a great dive environment with chances to spot creatures including sharks, whales and turtles. While the exposed nature of the islands can have an impact the visibility under water, Hawaii is well geared to the diving visitor and offers some exciting challenges.

Virgin Islands: Try St Croix for some amazing black coral dive spots.

Maldives: Despite reef destruction by El Nino, the Maldives is fighing back and continues to offer exciting opportunities for divers in stunning surroundings.

Galapagos Islands: A worthy destination in their own right, the Galapagos are even better for divers who can benefit from being able to explore off shore.

Turks and Caicos: This great tourist destination offers great diving all seasons as well as a relaxing vacation when out of the water.

Indonesia: The islands that make up Indonesia have some prime diving spots, although political troubles mean that some areas are not safe for visitors.

If you are passionate about surfing you may well also wish to emulate in the kind of laid back lifestyle that typifies this popular water sport.
It is likely that you have, more than once, dreamed of taking to the road in your very own surf-mobile to explore what other waters have to offer.
And while the surfing safari may seem something of a pipe dream (pun intended!) to those of us who have careers, families and responsibilities there is no reason why you can’t recreate the surfing safari experience during vacation time with friends or family.

Surfing Safari Destinations

If you are going to be limited for time on your trip you will want to select a destination where there are a number of great surf spots along a stretch of coast. Some great choices for the surfing safari include the California coast, Australia’s Gold Coast or the the Eastern Cape in South Africa.
While if you prefer to head a little further off the beaten track Sri Lanka and Indonesia can offer some interesting waters, however it is important to ascertain it is safe to travel before heading to these areas because of local volatilities, meaning that traditional destinations may be a better choice for those concerned about possible cancellations.

Choosing Surf Mates for Your Safari

While the original surfing safari might have consisted of groups of carefree young people, there are no rules here – the ultimate aim of your experience is to achieve a laid back relaxed vacation while enjoying some of the best waves on offer. Choose to travel with friends if you wish, make some special surfing memories with a partner or even take along the whole family to instil some enthusiasm for the surfing ethic in the next generation while at the same time having a vacation to remember.

The sport of wake boarding is becoming ever more popular. Wake boarding is an activity that is a cross between a board sport and water skiing and participants take part by strapping themselves to a board, in much the same way as a snowboarder, and then being towed behind a boat like a water skier.
The wake boarder executes moves and tricks by cutting in and out of the wake created by the boat that is towing them and using the water in much the same way as a snowboarder would a mountain side or a skateboarder would a sidewalk.
In order to wake board successfully the participant will need to have an understanding of the way in which their board will interact with the water – something that is familiar to those who are already competent surfers and windsurfers.
The combination of skills drawn from popular extreme sports means that wake boarding has a truly broad appeal – drawing in new initiates from the various sporting worlds for a number of reasons, from wanting to take their waterborne skills to another level, to wishing to recreate the thrill of riding a mountain closer to home.
The wake boarding community has a strong identity and is, like the communities associated with surfing and snowboarding, strongly linked to the leading edge of youth culture with the majority of wake boarders being in the under 25 age bracket.
As a result the sport of wake boarding exercises a double pull, with both the activity itself and the associated social scene being appealing to a broad range of people.
With wake boarding evening across the globe combining sporting demonstrations with youth culture gatherings (for example Europe plays host to a yearly wake boarding and music festival combining the sport with some serious socializing) this newest initiate to the world of extreme water sports is likely to continue to bring in new recruits to grow its identity and global reputation.

One is a tried and tested old favorite and the other is a relatively new kid on the block in terms of energetic outdoor activities. However the parallels between the sports of water skiing and wake boarding have led to an unavoidable debate over the merits of each particular activity.
Much like the mountainside arguments over the relative merits of skiing and snowboarding, the water sports world is finding itself divided into two camps over the water skiing versus wake boarding question.
In one corner are the water skiing purists who claim their pastime has the heritage that should earn it a place at the top of the pantheon of waterborne pursuits, while in the other are the wake boarding converts who extol elements such as the accessibility of their activity – offering up examples such as the fact that less powerful boats are needed for wake boarding.
Certainly wake boarding converts claim that the steep learning curve of the sport leads quickly to a level where participants can begin to practice exciting moves and tricks – a stage that takes longer to reach in water skiing.
And there is certainly a cultural divide between the two camps, with traditionalists set firmly in the skiing school of thought while those with a more progressive mindset finding themselves backing the boarding approach, which is itself inextricably linked into the ever growing alternative lifestyle that seems to encompass a myriad of board sports from skateboarding to surfing with its associated fashion, social and music scene.
The ongoing issues between the two communities are causing some unwanted waves in water sports circles with devotees of each activity accusing their rivals of unsavory behavior out on the water, however true lovers of either pastime will realize that the debate is simply a distraction from what these activities are all about, which is getting out there and enjoying the water.

While the United Kingdom, famed for its uninspiring weather may not seem the obvious choice of destination for a surfing vacation, a trip to the island nation of Britain can offer some exciting opportunities to experience some interesting European beaches and breaks.
If you are looking for a traditional surf experience during a UK stay then head for the south west- arguable the spiritual home of the country’s surfing community.
Beaches in Devon and Cornwall offer a variety of breaks, with a number of surfing schools being based in this area.
For those who enjoy the surfing social scene places like Newquay in Cornwall offer a good choice of beaches as well as a vibrant bar scene and nightlife, with beach based festivals taking place during the summer months.
If you are looking to stray a little from the tourist track then both Wales and the English East Coast offer some interesting options for the savvy surfer.
If you want an all-tide spot to surf in Wales try St Brides or Caswell Bay – but remember too pack a full body suit as even in summer a shortie is unlikely to cut it in this climate.
The east coast of England offers interesting tides at places including Tynemouth, Cayton Bay, and Seaton Carew but the waves in this area are not entirely dependable so it might not be the best idea to travel to this area specifically for surfing if you are on tight schedule.
For the brave and bold there is the chance to venture North of the Border and head into Scotland, whose North and West Coasts offer some unrivalled cold water opportunities and whose islands give each surfer the chance to discover the very own personal surf spot.
Thurso in Caithness hosts international surfing championships, with the nearby Dunnet Bay offering booth sand and reef breaks.

Chartering a boat with friends or family for a fishing trip can be a great way of spending a day. But there are always risks associated with being out on the water so it is important to take some precaution in order to avoid any accidents occurring and ruining everyone’s good time

Treat the Ocean With Respect

If you want to charter a boat then you must remember that the ocean is a powerful force to be reckoned with. Always listen to the advice of the boat owner in terms of whether you should head out and where you should fish. Remember that the skippers decision is final and that he or she is responsible for the safety of all crew while on board.

Take Safety Precautions

There is no excuse for not wearing a lifesaver while out on a boat. Ensure that every member f your party is correctly attired before fishing can begin. If there are children in your party ensure that one adult is responsible for each child at all times. If parents and other family members become caught up in catching fish it can lead to confusion over who should be watching each child which can be dangerous. Make sure each person is aware of their responsibilities.

Cast with Care

Once fishing commences everyone on board needs to ensure that they cast with care, taking into account the position of other people on board. Space anglers around the deck and instruct everyone to stay within their designated parameters while fishing.

Drink Responsibly

While many aglers enjoy a beer while indulging their passion, no one should ever be drunk on board. Make sure party members know their drinking limits.

Swab the Decks

Try and keep decks clear of clutter and clean the decks after landing a catch. Wet slippery decks can easily lead to accidents as can discarded tackle.

Sea fishing is an exciting and rewarding outdoor pastime and a great way for generations to bond. Instilling a love of fishing in your children can be a brilliant way to forge a link between you that will last a lifetime but how should you start?

Introducing a Child to the Concept of Fishing

Young children are naturally curious and are likely to find all aspects of fishing exciting. While toddlers will not be able to join their parents on sea angling adventures early on, you can excite their enthusiasm by getting them to come along on bait seeking trip – after all what toddler doesn’t think that digging for worms or looking for crabs in rock pools is a great way to spend time?
When taking part in these activities you can explain toy your child what the crabs and worms will be used for – you may wish to allow them to watch as you prepare bait before a fishing trip in order that they are not surprised by the practice later on.

First Fishing Trips

Once a child is ready to be introduced to fishing you should select a safe spot for their first attempt. Beach casting is probably the safest way for a child to start sea angling. Try getting a child to cast without a hook at first in order for them to master the action. Once you are confident they understand the way in which casting works, you will need to bait a hook for them and assist them with their first casts.

A Child’s First Catch

If a child gets a bite try to direct them in what to do, but avoid the urge to take over yourself in order to land the fish. A child will want to feel that they are responsible for their own achievements and will soon tire of fishing if you always step in at the crucial moment.

Many people find themselves attracted to the idea of being able to sail the oceans independently, harnessing the power of nature in order to travel to exciting destinations while enjoying an experience with friends or family.
But sailing is a skill that needs to be learned before would be skippers and crew can cast off on their own, so how should you go about it?

Learning to Sail in a Leisurely Way

There are a number of ways in which to learn the skills of sailing. If you are happy to acquire sailing knowledge over a period of time why not consider joining a sailing club or group and taking part in sailing activities with more experienced crew members who can pass on their wisdom during weekly or monthly meetings.

Sailing Schools at Home

If you live near a coast you may wish to take part in a dedicated sailing school. Intensive courses are offered by accredited sailing school many coastal areas. The advantage of this choice is that you will be able to save on accommodation costs during your course by staying in your own home. However, you may find familiar surroundings can be uninspiring.

Sailing Schools in Vacation Locations

If you want to combine acquiring sailing knowledge with a relaxing break then there are sailing schools based in exciting locations across the globe. Choose from a shore based course, where you stay on land and take lessons during the day, or opt for on board instruction. Many people find that learning to sail away from home is a magical memory combining a fresh environment with exciting personal development and new friends who share your passions. You can even choose to combine the two with a dual base break, where the first half is spend learning the essentials and the second practicing them on board your very own rental vessel as you explore the area.

With the opening up of the Baltic states in recent decades, Croatia’s Dalmation Coast has grown in popularity with the tourist trade and now provides a perfect location for a self sail vacation.
Whether you choos to cruise your way there, or charter in situ, the Dalmation Coast can cater for the needs of you and your crew.
Popular with Europeans, Damlmatia offers some stunning surroundings as well as great conditions for the fair-weather skipper.
With a spectacular coastline and strings of secluded islands, no casual crew will ever be disappointed after plotting a course for Croatia.
The Dalmation coast is divided into three areas. Southern, Central and Northen – with each offering some exciting highlights of its own. Plot a course that fits your timeframe in order not to miss any of the exciting opportunities along the way.
In the Northern part of the area you may wish to visit the traditional beach resort of Baska Voda, or perhaps you would prefer the unspoiled island of Korkula. Certainly Dubrovnik is not to be missed with its historical background and cosmopolitan feel.
In the Central area of the Dalmation Coast you can spend time in Sibenik – home to the Cathedral of St James which is designated as a World Heritage Site or explore the traditional fishing village at Vodice.
The Southern part of the Dalmation Coast is home to the Neretva River Delta and it’s fertile plains, as well as offering ample island hopping opportunities.
If you plan to sail in Croatia, those in the know say that the best months to go are June or September, although the climate is temperate all summer long. Choosing a visit in the midsummer months can mean vying with local tourists, European visitors and cruise passengers for space and attention.

If you have mastered your sailing skills but are beginning to tire of the same old courses time after time, then perhaps it is time to look into a self sail vacation. For those who love sailing there can be few better environments to indulge their passion than the Greek Islands. Dotting the blue waters of the beautiful Aegean sea, Greece offers the casual crew a choice of two island group destinations with each having so much to offer, from total rest and relaxation to excitement and exploration.
Boat owners can travel to the islands independently, or if you prefer to charter there are plenty of opportunities on offer.

Sailing the Sporades

The Sporades sit to the east of the Greek mainland and boast a host of delights for sailing guests. Choose from a plethora of beautiful sandy beaches, take a dip in the stunning blue Aegean waters or moor and explore the beautiful natural on shore landscapes.
Populated islands Alonissos, Skiathos, Skiros and Skopelos offer the chance to discover some traditional whitewashed fishing villages, while unpopulated islands make a great destination for those looking to get away from it all.

Sailing the Cyclades

To the south east of the mainland sit the Cyclades, a group of more than 200 islands in an Aegean archipelago.
Popular with tourists from across the world, the Cyclades includes such destinations as Mykonos and Santorini where visitors can find all the usual tourist trades in spades.
Elsewhere there is the chance to explore a range of uninhabited islands, while budding geologist can enjoy the mix of mountainous and volcanic terrain.
A wealth of beaches are on offer with stunning stretches of sand, and crews can choose from a location with services on site or opt for the seclusion of an undeveloped space.
Step off the deck and try your hand at some different watersports, with instruction offered on shore, or discover the true face of Greece in one of the unspoiled village along your course.
