Do you find it difficult to go to the gym on a daily basis? Do you find the idea of playing sports appealing? Are you bored of playing the same old baseball and basketball matches with your friends to improve your fitness? Well, why don’t you do something new and innovative to improve your fitness? How about water sports?

One of the biggest advantages of opting for water sports is that your mind shifts focus from fitness and exercise to survival. If you don’t swim when you are in the water, you will drown and die. On the other hand, there is nothing stopping you from standing idly during the basketball match, right? You are not going to sink into the ground, right? This simple difference will force you to stay mobile and active at all times.

If you are a sailing on a boat, you will have to use your muscles to power the boat over the surface of the water. Going in for a motorized boat is one option but that will just defeat the purpose of going in for water sports.

Another advantage of choosing water sports is the new things that you will learn. Knowing how to assess the change in direction of wind and making various changes to the sails to ensure they remain filled with air and move at high speed can be a very interesting task. In such a scenario, you will quickly lose sight of the physical exertion and will enjoy yourself throughout the activity. The best part is that you will end up losing your excess fat in a very short period of time.

Bodyboarding: The Perfect Start for Beginners

If you don’t think you are ready to surf, bodyboarding may be the perfect place to start. Instead of needing to concentrate of the feel of the waves and your own balance, this water sport allows a person to just concentrate on staying on board. Many times out on the beach, you will see people simply walking out to a place where they can stand and then riding the waves in on a small foam board.

Build up experience by starting slowly. Just walk out until the water is a little higher than your waist. Right before a wave reaches you, lay on top of the board, facing the shore and hold on tight. As the wave comes by, the board will be carried on the wave and you will feel yourself move. If you wait, the waves will take you straight into the sand. (You may want to stand up and try again before you find your board all the way to shore. Depending on the weather conditions and wind, the waves may be rough or fairly smooth.

Because timing is everything when it comes to bodyboarding, it may take a few times to catch a wave. The good news is that they just keep coming and so if you miss one, another will follow shortly. It takes practice to get it down, but the more comfortable you feel, the more you will enjoy this relaxing water sport. Venture farther out each time, but be careful. Being out in the ocean can be unpredictable. At the very least, it is always a good idea to be out in the water with a friend.

As you progress, you may be looking for more of a challenge. Much like surfing, when bodyboarding, you can ride waves out in deeper waters and even try out tricks and special moves. If you just aren’t feeling enough excitement, it may be time to move on to surfing.

Strategies for a Swim Meet

While you may have come to the pool as part of a team, a swim meet requires that individuals carry their own weight to ensure a victory for the team. This can be tough as there is not a lot of opportunity for teamwork. (With the exception of the relay races.) When it is your turn to step up to the deck or the diving board, you may have a sense of being alone and not having a team supporting you.

In-spite of this feeling, your job is to do the best that you can and bring all that you have to the event that you are responsible for. For a moment, take the idea of a team off the table and only focus on what you are getting ready to do. Get rid of the pressure of succeeding for the team and look to beat the person to your left and the person to your right.

If you are having trouble concentrating, remove everything from your mind and do the best that you can to ignore everything going on around you. If it helps, imagine that you are only competing against yourself with the goal to break your best time. This can not only get rid of the anxiety, it can also give you a new sense of focus and purpose.

If you don’t have any events going on and you have the time, walk over to a teammates race and be there to support him. By taking this first step, you may find that someone on the team takes the time to be there for you at the beginning and start of your own race. When it comes to swim teams, the members set the tone for working together. If you don’t see this as something that your group is doing, take it upon yourself to look for a way to connect with and encourage each other.
